Heather M McGinness AFSS/NZFSS Joint Conference 2019

Heather M McGinness

Dr Heather McGinness is a CSIRO Senior Research Scientist specialising in freshwater river floodplain and wetland ecology, with a focus on avian ecology. Heather has a strong interest in improving the understanding and management of water as a key integrating element crucial to the resilience of our inland agricultural, mixed and natural ecosystems. Her work is filling critical knowledge gaps for long-term science, policy and management regarding environmental water and other habitat requirements of floodplain wetland species and communities. Heather’s expertise is applicable to a range of domains and she is able to develop conceptual models of whole systems and integrate diverse sources of information. This allows her to develop novel solutions to challenges, communicate complexity effectively and lead forward-thinking collaborative projects. Dr McGinness is currently the Theme Leader for the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office Monitoring, Evaluation and Research Program’s ‘Diversity Theme’. She also leads a range of research projects, including using the latest technology in satellite-tracking the movements of migratory and nomadic waterbirds, and investigating habitat requirements, pressures and threats. She is an active science communicator via multiple channels, providing advice for end-users in practical ways and making her science accessible to a range of stakeholders.
