Third Reedy Lake is part of the Kerang Lakes Ramsar complex of wetlands, located north of Kerang and forms part of the Torrumbarry Irrigation District. Currently, an irrigation infrastructure development project is underway that will generate environmental benefits and reduce current water losses (estimated at 1600 ML/year). As a result of these works, the water regime will change from a permanent system, to one with a three-four year wetting and drying cycle. This will be achieved by constructing a channel (1.4 km long) and associated infrastructure to disconnect the Third Reedy Lake from the Torrumbarry Irrigation System and then provide a planned environmental watering regime for the lake. An Environment Effects Statement and Impact Assessment process including extensive site surveys have been undertaken. The project has taken five years to get to the drawdown phase where lake water levels will be lowered, at which point fish exiting the lake are being monitored and counted. This is when we struck gold!
